"Staffage"
This 17th century term refers to the cooperation between landschape painters and figure painters. Bazuin & de Blécourt is preparing an article on this topic. Berchem, Cuyp, Swanevelt, Pynacker, Lingelbach, Adriaen van de Velde; just a few names of 17th century landscape painters that either used others to paint the figures in their landscapes or themselves offered their figure painting services to other landscape painters. Our research is expected to provide insight in these 17th joint-ventures, workshop practices and joint signature customs.
